Homesteading
By Leslie Abbott
Planting fruit trees can be a rewarding way to enjoy the first blossoms of spring and have quality fruit for years to come. In 2000 we planted apples, cherries, hazelnuts and a few others only to lose them do two consecutive years of army worms. While I was busy peeling logs and constructing our log home I neglected to pay attention. The soil was also very much clay loam in what used to be lowland. This year i had a solution. I was busy again, when i purchased the trees it was raining, and the ground was muck. So I decided to plant the whole lots of trees into a raised bed for this year. The raised bed is fille3d with loose gravel, clay loam, and manure at a rate of 1/3 each; followed by a generous roto-tilling. I then added root hormone, a bit of fertilizer, and after planting the trees, soaked them well. When I have time I will prepare the new location throughout the summer, and then transplant the trees in the fall. I will then add lots of mulch to protect them for the first year. It is kind of like having my own nursery.

I wish you luck Leslie regarding planting fruit trees. I myself, have a black thumb. Plants see me and they run...

Thanks for the comment. You either like gardening or you don't. But, it is easier to start with something simple like tomatoes, or geraniums.
My brother has a green thumb and now has apple, peach and Christmas trees growing on his farm. My mother tells me the asparagus is in season right now and he has about 3000 asparagus plants this season. He also has acres of strawberries which will be in season soon. Fruit trees are a challenge but the rewards are worth it.

I have three reasons for planting trees. My property was logged a few years back. So I want some windbreak around the house. I also have a lot of trees on the north side where the birds hide and I don't see them in the winter. Fruit trees with give me fruit and birds on the south where most of my windows are.
It's wonderful to have your own fruit and vegetables. You know what has gone into the soil and if they have been sprayed. We grow almost all our own. It's great! I enjoyed your intel and will be following you.

Raised beds and root toner... how nice. I have a fruit orchard also. Mostly Anna's apples, tangerines... great to hear from you. Looking forward to more!
